Japan, Past and Present is intended to offer Western audiences a window into Japan as it really is and once was. This is accomplished by three means.
Translations: Essays by authors like Mishima Yukio and Tanizaki Jun’ichirō are translated on a regular basis to give readers an idea of how the most celebrated critical Japanese minds have thought and talked about their own country. All but a few translations of general importance are and will remain paywalled.
Collations from the Press: Weekly and monthly roundups of the Japanese press drawing on a wide range of sources allow readers to judge for themselves what the actual contours of discourse and opinion in Japan today are. Weekly roundups will always be free, but monthly roundups are paywalled.
Original Essays: I occasionally post original essays of my own on topics from the Japanese past of particular interest to me.
By these three methods, I hope that Japan, Past and Present will serve as an unparalleled source for current and historical affairs in Japan.
